Cosmetic surgery of the buttock is relatively uncommon and the reason for this phenomenon is due to the undeniable limitations of this surgery. Lifting techniques through suspension threads are often unsatisfactory due to the modest and short-lived results. On the other hand, real gluteal lift surgery allows highly satisfying results but these are burdened by scars that are rather significant in terms of extension and characteristics. Augmentation gluteoplasty with prosthetic implantation is widespread in South America and less in Europe because of the discomfort that the implant can sometimes cause to the patient in an anatomical area that is constantly stimulated by movement. In recent years, some companies in the sector have created biomaterials based on hyaluronic acid for important body fillings. Their origin can be attributed to the search for an alternative to breast implants for augmentation mammoplasty, but the project was unsuccessful because of the predictable difficulties that the product, once injected, can create during some diagnostic tests of the breast such as ultrasound or mammography.
The real success of body macrofillers is linked to the treatment of the gluteus, in fact, when a volume between 100 – 150 ml is required, it is possible to obtain a highly satisfying result precisely with the use of hyaluronic acid. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting with a return to immediate social and work life. A plan is carried out with the patient in a standing position to define the areas in the upper quadrants to receive the implant and then the treatment is performed with the patient in a prone position. The product is injected with appropriate cannulae under local anaesthesia through a microscopic incision and, with it being a substance that is not confined, the result is harmonised with manual remodelling. The procedure is completed with a pressure dressing which should be left on for a couple of days to stabilise the substance.
The only limit of augmentation gluteoplasty through hyaluronic acid is the reversibility of the result compared to a cost that is not really economic. In fact, to maintain a satisfactory volume, it is advisable to provide a small annual adjustment without which the filler will be completely resorbed after a few years.
